Not Not Fun Records has established itself as one of the most important US record labels in the last three years, pushing drone and primal, weird rock to a whole new level. Championed by doctors like Thurston Moore, Byron Coley, and Julian Cope, it’s one of the labels that’ll define the sound of this decade.

A bazaar inhabited by weirdness, funky ghosts, and lots of musickal bizzareness – all of it now oozing in your ears, thru records and monumental shows by melting names like POCAHAUNTED, SUN ARAW, MAGIC LANTERN, U.S. GIRLS, YELLOW SWANS, BARN OWL, DUCKTAILS, ROBEDOOR, and churning out records by THURSTON MOORE, CHRISTINA CARTER, RACCOO-OO-OON, SKULLFLOWER, BLUES CONTROL and BIRDS OF DELAY.

POCAHAUNTED are Amanda Brown and Bethany Sharayah, but for this unique tour they’ve boosted their lineup to five. Known for their relentless output, these girls are queens of blissed out drone. They say their music sounds like something between the earth’s period and heavy-lidded afro-psych-funk. It does, thanks to their magickal native american sceances with guitars, keyboards, and drums. As Not Not Fun’s stalwarts, they’re responsible for turning drone on its skirts, adding it loads of peyote chants, PiL-like riddims, and a nasty COLOSSAL vibe.

Their first outing was Not Not Fun’s Moccasinging tape in 2006, followed by the Peyote Road LP in the great Woodsist label. Later, in 2008, they reached cosmic-dom with the heavy dub Island Diamonds in Not Not Fun, with drums by thumper Bobb Bruno, and mastered by the ubiquituous James Plotkin, enabling them to reach, deservingly, a wider audience. Their latest chuggy record on Weird Forest, Mirror Mics, rams the calypso further deep in your ears, and heats things up for their upcoming LP on Troubleman Unlimited – and their rolling-thunder-in-the-desert European June tour.

SUN ARAW really wraps up this event with his chubby tropical rythms, boiled guitar mandala-lines, and synth-isms as seismic and ancient as Popol Vuh’s. SUN ARAW is Cameron Stallone of Magic Lantern, and he’s the prophet of a new weird surf psychedelia. He’s got heavy bass and rolling mantras as those sluggish Long Beach waves he conjures to the levitation rock. This is funk, this is collective narcosis, and this is digital far-out trance rock.

Sun Araw’s first bottle to come ashore was 2007’s « The Phynx» CD-R, reissued this year Not Not Fun vinyl. In 2008 came the « Boat Trip » EP on Woodsist. After these first burnout, spacey tracks, Stallone’s agenda is now more dubby, more spookaribbean, as it came out on Not Not Fun’s « Beach Head » LP and his brand new split LP with Predator Vision, « Hey Mandala ! / « Real Aliens ». Real warm and dreamy trip rock for June 2009, you bet.

DATASHOCK sind ein musikalisches Kollektiv mit wechselnder Besetzung. Ihre Musik adäquat zu beschreiben ist ein fast unmögliches Unterfangen – zu reichhaltig sind deren Wurzeln, zu heterogen ihr Output. Sie selbst bezeichnen ihre Musik mit einem Augenzwinkern als „Grusel-Kraut”, und obwohl ihre elektro-akustischen Live-Improvisationen durchaus Anleihen bei Krautrock, (Neo-)Psychedelica und moderner Komposition nehmen, so etablieren sie doch eine eigene Klangästhetik: Datashocks dichter Soundteppich aus Drones, Noise, Loops und Psychedelic kann als avantgardistisch bezeichnet werden – im Sinne einer unbefangenen Herangehensweise und innovativen Bearbeitung musikalischer Tendenzen und Strömungen, ohne das Motiv der Perfektion in den Vordergrund zu stellen. Ihre Musik ähnelt vielmehr momenthaften Skizzen, spontan festgehaltenen Ideen, die einer ständigen Überarbeitung und Erweiterung unterliegen und deshalb gerade live zur vollen Entfaltung kommen.

Seit sechs Jahren zieht das saarländische Kollektiv seine Kreise und hat dabei weltweit Spuren hinterlassen. Veröffentlichungen sind u.a. in Italien (Qbico), Frankreich (Textile) und auf dem bandeigenen Meudiademorte-Label erschienen.
